What are some good bedding plants that stay all year long?

I am a complete beginner at gardening. I want the names of some plants that stay all year long and flower in the spring/summer


Preferably cheap, common plants

What are some good bedding plants that stay all year long?
you say that you want them to last for years, then bedding plants(so- called because you change them) aren't what you are after - a great one, however, if you still want one is Gazania. They open up in the sun, and go to bed at night and we've had ours for 3 years now!!





But, you might be looking for perennials. They'll die back in the autumn and regrow in the spring, theres hundreds of them and they all flower at different times! Check some out on www.crocus.co.uk - expensive but they've got loads of greta photos

Reply:You'd enjoy the BBC Gardening site, as your in the UK it gives lots of information and it is changed constantly. The Better Homes and Garden site in USA is great too. Don't worry, it seems daunting at first but after a few seasons, and some reading you'll be well into it.

Reply:It's going to depend largely on where you are located. Impatiens and pansies will last for a large part of the year in warm areas; in cooler areas, these will also last quite a long time, but will of course have to contend with cold winters and frost, snow, and ice. To find what is best for your area, check with a nearby nursery; they will generally stock plants that are good for your area. You might consider growing your own bedding plants from seed - it's an inexpensive way to have a nice garden if you have more time than money :-)

Reply:Try the Gardening Direct website, they have a good selection of reasonably priced plants. I've used them for a few years and they're good. They're a UK firm.

I would say pansies because they are very easy to grow and take care of and the colours are wonderfull, they also spread quite a lot which is a bonus if you are on a budget. Another plant is polyanthus they come in a huge range of colours and they do come back year after year. If you would like any more ideas on plants let me know and i will give you a list of plants that are very good for the summer and also brilliant colours and keep on flowering.

Reply:Depending on where you live "Vinca" bloom year round where I'm at in Calif. and they come in four colors. When the flower is dead you can pick them off and throw them in the ground all over in other areas or just let them drop because they re-seed. I filled the entire front of my house because my neighbor told me that one day when she was in her yard weeding so I kept all the wilted and dead flowers trimmed off of her plants and threw them in my planter boxes. Talk about a Win/Win situation. I didn't think I had a green thumb so I didn't want to spend alot of money to kill everything. But I do have great success with bulbs too but it's only in the spring but it's a beautiful sight and smell each year.
Reply:Buy perennials for each season and you will only have to plant them once. They will come back each season and you will only have to weed and fertilize.

Reply:Bedding plants are usually annuals. For anything longer you need perennials. Some are summer flowering some are winter. An idea is to get you self a good gardening book.

cuttings, you need a clean cut with a pen knife or similar cutting tool, you Can use rooting powder but most hardy shrubs and bushes will root in a drop of water just a small jam jar washed out of course, just a little watter rain water is better


And names , well their are only ever greens that look the same all the time , but buddleja or butter fly bush are nice hardy cut back in October to keep it to your size, iv got the black knight variate long purple flowers loads of butter fly but there's the globe variety yellow globe flowers, also comes back every year is, Gaura, Ballerina Rose" most gorgeous gentle flower only planted one last year and it was just the best this is a small shrub (not a rose bush) witch some don't like due to the sharp thorns !, this has a pink to red flower on a long stem i guarantee it will win you over not to pricey under five quid, also is Aquilegia, iv got the Fairytale Pink, grows to 1ft 6in 1ft approx again dainty with masses of pink two tone nodding flowers in late spring summer some seed you can get will self seed for the following year fox gloves but take care if there's children as it's poison, if swollowed see your garden centre for more advise thre's masses you only ever need plant once and enjoy, beding are fine in hanging baskets or pots but i dont rate them my self, miss a wartering and there had it with a half respectable summer busy lizie are nice iv an old victorian chimney pot witch i have a plant pot sits nice in the top looks really nice with a dome of busy lizie,
Reply:As people have already said, bedding plants are usually annuals. If you are looking for something to cover the front of a flower bed and look good all year round, go for some form of perennial ground cover plant. Many of them will flower too, mix and match to have something flowering at most times of the year.
Reply:you cant go wrong with pansys they will grow anywhere and nearly all year round.
Reply:Hi, I have some Chrysanthemums that have never stopped blooming all year, Pansies are fine too and Primulas, all very colour-full, but you must keep dead heading every few days or so to keep the plants in flower, if you don't do this then they will go to seed. Good Luck.
Reply:Try viola. It blooms in early spring and last until fall. Then leave it to reseed itself for next year's flowers. Easy to grow, no obvious diseases, sunny to shade spots. Just water regularly.
Reply:azaelias (sp?) have green leaves all year round and flower in spring, but they are slightly larger plants/shrubs, heather is another good one, needs very little looking after and has greenery all year with different varieties flowering at different times. primulas are a smaller plant and are good for bedding plants, they do tend to keep their green leaves all year but can sometimes die back a little bit.


lobelia was another i had that stayed green year round with different colour flowers through spring and summer depending on which type you got.


pansies need a little bit more lookiong after but can be a year round plant, the two different varities mized together mean flowers most of the year too (winter and summer pansies).


failing all these, try a local gardening centre, they will give you more information on each plant they have.


I too knoe nothing about gardening, but seem to have kept most of our plants alive!!

Reply:ah, so your green at Gardening huh? Well I tell you the best thing for you to do, is go to some of the nursery sites. That way you'll have a picture to look at ,and not just rely on names of plants. I'll give you address of a couple that I have researched, and ordered from. You also need to know if their going to be in full sun, shade, or partial shade. Keep that in mind.Also how big they get. I'm going to have to dig up and move some plants I just put in at the end of last summer ,because there already to big.
