Price, Its had to beat the big chains. Quality and selection, go pay the little extra for nursery stock.
Problems and questions, unless your interested in who they went out w/last week (as that is all they know at Wall-Mart) go ask the guy that feeds his kids' working in the trade. Ask the experts at the nursery.
Where is the cheapest and best place to buy flowers? nursery. walmart, lowes or home depot?
Wal Mart cheapest, but you need to buy them the day that the nursery truck delivers, cause they quickly look sick. Lowes is more expensive, but you have a year guarantee on the plant. (to get your money back on a dead plant, you have to have original container and receipt, plus take the dead plant back, also) A nursery is the best place for great advice and help with selections for your area. Hope this helps.
Reply:Nursery! They order plant varieties that thrive "in your area." The mega boxes just order "stuff"- some of which is NOT viable in your local soil! Nurseries have professionals to answer questions. They know their plant stuff. The mega boxes, well... Minimum wage people are probably not up to par. Buying price alone is generally a mistake. (By the way, my local nursery sells better quality plants CHEAPER than the "always the low price, always" store!)
Reply:My choice would be Walmart because they always sell for less then their other competitors.
Reply:This is a hard question Cheap and best are not the same thing.
Nursery plants are usually well cared for. The employees
can usually answer any garden related question you have. which plants will thrive in your area because of local weather conditions, soil and insect problems. what soil mix you should put down in your garden bed. etc.
Nursery prices will depend on their cost of business, where you are, what they grow themselves and what they ship in from elsewhere.
Lowes and Home depot are about even in price and quality.
they usually have at least one employee around who can answer a question or two. but no one really knowledgeable
the quality of their plants depends on who the buyer for their regional store is.
Wal-mart can be cheap but the quality of their plants can be very poor. The employees are useless. So you have to know what you are looking at when you shop there. I find their plants are often root bound and sometimes suffering root rot from over watering or in trouble from under watering. on the other hand they often have some good bargains. I bought some tomato plants on sale the other day for $1.50 these were the same as the ones Wal-mart was selling for $5.00 only they were growing sideways instead of straight having been "damaged" during shipping.
Reply:Actually, I've found the best prices at local farmer's markets. They also seem to last longer.
