Silk flowers??? cheap looking?

i was thinking maybe i would do silk flowers for the wedding...i think they look pretty, they're def. less expensive, im just not sure if that would seem tacky or not...any opinions?

Silk flowers??? cheap looking?
Okay, I'm definitely in the pro-silk camp (doing them for mine). Good ones look fantastic and last.

One poster said the savings might be negligible because good-quality silks can cost as much as real flowers. Well, that's true if you only look at the cost per stem, but you will still save with silks if you do them yourself, because you will not be paying labor costs. Also, with silks you can get some stems with several flowers and cut those apart to use as filler. You'll pay a lot more to buy three filler stems than you will to buy one silk stem that you can cut into three.

Another poster advised not to do them yourself because you won't have time. A big advantage to silks is that you can do them yourself, in your own time. My bouquets, boutanniers, and centerpieces are completed, and it's still three months til the wedding. I saved a bundle.
Reply:Well done, silk flowers look like the real thing , and you may think they are until you touch them! But one word of caution, despite what you may have heard, the "good ones" can often be more expensive than real flowers.

Make sure you do your research and see the samples in person, don't pick out fake flowers online without seeing and holding a sample in your hands first!

Having real and fake all depends on what is most imporatant to you on your wedding day. If you want great food, you can fore-go really pricey flower arrangements! If you want the flowers to look spectacular, you may want to get real flowers from a reputable florist, or find the best fake flowers you can and cut back on something else.

Just a thought :)
Reply:They can be beautiful. Just be sure you get clean pretty ones. What is tacky is for people to spend so much on the decorating that they can't afford simple hospitality - or even worse, they spend so much on flowers that they ask for cash gifts for the honeymoon.

You do what you can afford and don't worry about being criticized for not spending too much. Again, just be sure the flowers are pretty and not beat up from being at the store too long.
Reply:Not cheap looking at all. If they are done right, and by a professional, I think they look better than real flowers. No allergies to worry about either.

My sisters had silk, and the florist who put them together even got hot glue with a little glitter in it, and put it (very lightly) on some of the leaves and petals to make it look like dew. In the pictures, it catches the light just right, and the flowers look like they have real dew on them! Absolutely beautiful.

Not to mention that they still have their flowers, and they still look just as good today as they did when they walked down the aisle.... and we're talking over 10 years!

I'd have a silk florist or real florist do the arrangements though, don't try to do them yourself, you don't have the time! :)

Good luck, and Congratulations!
Reply:I dont think they are tacky, they arent as pretty as real ones but sometimes the budget just doesnt allow for it.

We are doing silk flowers for the guest tables, there are about 20 of them and we just dont have the money to do that so we did them ourselves (my aunt arranges flowers). We did real flowers for people though (bouquets, boutineers, corsages....oh and pews)....

I dont think people really pay that much attention to centerpieces and stuff. I mean they notice when they are extravagant but other than that, it's just something small. Some people do candles and stuff instead but we would have to had everything covered so we opted for fake flowers.....Who cares, it's going to be a fun day and if people are considered with flowers more so than other things, well then they are lame!
Reply:I agree with some of the other posters... if you get the right flowers and right quality they are gorgeous... But if you get the cheap flowers from like a dollar store you have a hard time making them look pretty. You just have to be careful price wise because silk flowers can end up just as expensive or more so than real flowers.
Reply:I used silk flowers for the decor and fresh flowers for the bouquets. The ones at Joann Fabrics are quite nice and work well for decor flowers, at least. But I can't say they're much less expensive than the fresh, I guess it depends on the flowers you're choosing. I didn't like the ones at Michael's, they look too fake.
Reply:Depends on whether you're having your wedding indoors or outdoors. Indoors, they're fine as arrangements or pew decorations, but I would definitely use fresh flowers for your bouquets. You don't have to have an elaborate bouquet and places like Costco even do wedding packages for fairly cheap. Good luck!
Reply:Here are two amazing silk floral designers! I saw designs by J. Lynn in person and did not even realize they were fake! I would say though to go with someone like a designer because they get much better silk than if you went to a craft store.

I highly recommend details by jlynn. She is very helpful and far more communicative than angelsaccents. I gave her a budget of 300 and she is easily staying within that range.

Personally I did real the first time, spent over 3,000 and have nothing to show for it.
Reply:How about a combination?

If you are looking at a cost savings you could do a mix of real and artificial. Perhaps do artifical to decorate the church and recpetion and then use real flowers for the rest.
Reply:This is just my own personal opinion--I don't like them and do think they are tacky, but it's YOUR wedding, and if you like them, then have them. Your wedding should be everything YOU want. Good luck :)
Reply:They have really nice ones that look absolutely beautiful and real. I think if that's what you want go for it...and hey you don't have to preserve your bouquet to keep it in tact!
Reply:I used silk flowers and they were beautiful. YOu can get very tacky looking ones, but some look very real.. PLUS!! you get to keep your bouquet forever!
Reply:Go with real fresh flowers....NO SILK!
Reply:i like really, but it is your wedding. do what you like the most.
Reply:they look good if you get th right one... just dont get the very cheap ones
Reply:Nothing matches up to the real thing...get them if you want
Reply:No not at all. I LOVE SILKS!
